Wildcats Rally in Fourth Quarter to Take the River Rivalry Game

The Winslow Wildcats scored two touchdowns in the final six minutes Friday night to beat the Ashgrove Millers 21-17, reclaiming the traveling trophy that has changed hands almost every year of the river rivalry.

Trailing by three deep into the fourth quarter, Winslow leaned on its ground game, stringing together a long drive that ate most of the clock before punching in the go-ahead score. A late interception near midfield sealed the result as the home crowd emptied onto the field.

How it turned

The game hinged on a few moments in the second half:

  • A goal-line stand early in the third quarter that kept Ashgrove out of the end zone
  • A 40-yard kickoff return that set up the tying field goal
  • The final drive, which covered most of the field on the ground

The win moves the Wildcats to a winning record heading into the final two weeks of the regular season. Coaches said the team still needs to clean up penalties, which stalled two earlier drives, but praised the defense for holding firm when it mattered.

The trophy will sit in the Winslow High case until next fall, when the two schools meet again on Ashgrove’s field.
